Original data
Which tool tracks your brand in AI answers and your Google rankings in one place?
· Measured 1 to 25 September 2026 and 4 October 2026
Several do, in different ways. Asked this exact question on 4 October 2026, every engine that answered named Semrush, whose own site says it tracks appearances in AI Overviews beside the same brand's Google rankings. Others build AI tracking into a wider SEO product or connect Google Search Console. Whichever you choose, read the two numbers separately, because they measure different things.
A ranking is where your page sits in Google's list of links. A mention is whether the answer a buyer reads names you. On the buyer questions we track, the two seldom went together: of the 1,093 answers that named a tool, 91 (8%) came when the tool's own site was on Google's first page for the same question.
Key takeaways
- Asked on 4 October 2026, Semrush was named by every one of the four engines that answered, and eight other tools by fewer.
- 8% of the answers that named a tool came when its own site was on Google's first page for that question.
- Peec AI was named in 97 answers, and its site was on the first page for none of those questions.
- Google's AI Overviews cited first-page sites most (41% of its citations); ChatGPT least (5%).
- A tool that shows both numbers helps only if it keeps them apart, question by question.
A ranking and a mention are different tests
SEO earns a ranking. An AI answer earns a mention. Assistants search the web, read what comes back and write an answer, and most people do not click past it. Pew Research found people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% (July 2025, 900 adults).
So a page can rank well and be missing from the sentence a buyer reads, and a brand can be named without ranking at all. For example, Peec AI was named in 97 answers in the data below, and its site was on Google's first page for none of those questions. A tool that reports one number as a stand-in for the other answers the wrong question. The measurement below shows how far apart the two are.
Google's first page beside the AI answers, measured
We measured this on the 20 buyer questions we track about our own category. The visit that reads Google's AI Overview for a question also records Google's first page of results for it. So for 72 of the 80 times a question was asked from 1 to 25 September 2026, we have both: whose site ranked, and which tools the five engines named.
| Tool | Answers naming it | Of those, its site on Google's first page | Searches where its site was on the first page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | 146 | 7 | 4 of 68 |
| Otterly.AI | 138 | 3 | 4 of 72 |
| Profound | 136 | 30 | 13 of 72 |
| Peec AI | 97 | 0 | 0 of 72 |
| Ahrefs | 70 | 0 | 0 of 68 |
| Scrunch | 57 | 5 | 3 of 72 |
| SE Ranking | 46 | 0 | 2 of 72 |
| AthenaHQ | 45 | 3 | 4 of 72 |
| Rankscale | 32 | 2 | 1 of 72 |
| Writesonic | 28 | 0 | 0 of 72 |
Across every tool we count, 1,093 answers named a tool and 91 of them, 8%, came when that tool's own site was on Google's first page for the question. Peec AI (97), Ahrefs (70) and Writesonic (28) were named in those answers without their site ever reaching that first page. It works the other way too: when a tool's site was on the first page, at least one engine named the tool in the same run 43 times out of 91.
The engines differ sharply. Google AI Overviews cited first-page sites far more than the others, and the result ranked first for the question was among its sources in 36 of 71 answers. ChatGPT cited that top result in 6 of 72. A Google ranking says most about Google's own AI Overview and least about ChatGPT, which is the case for tracking the mention directly.
The same question, asked on 4 October 2026
We added “Which tool tracks my brand in AI answers and my Google rankings in one place?” to our tracked questions on 25 September. On 4 October 2026, four of the five engines answered it:
| Engine | Tools named, from our list | Sites cited |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Semrush, Profound, Otterly.AI and Peec AI | semrush.com |
| Claude | Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Rankability | keyword.com, frase.io, otterly.ai, radarkit.ai, technologyadvice.com, onelittleweb.com, dageno.ai, useomnia.com, airankchecker.net, blog.laratranslate.com, teachthought.com, layer3labs.io, menra.ai, zerply.ai, tryanalyze.ai, arobis.ai, industry-lens.com |
| Gemini | Semrush, SE Ranking, BrightEdge and Rankscale | rankscale.ai, semrush.com, beamtrace.com, seranking.com, aiclicks.io, thesocialcat.com, yotpo.com, brightedge.com |
| Perplexity | Semrush | semrush.com, rankability.com, zapier.com, blog.hubspot.com, rankscale.ai |
| Google AI Overviews | No answer: results page not read that day | |
Semrush was named by every one of the four engines that answered. Its own site describes it as: “The AI Visibility Toolkit inside Semrush's marketing suite: brand mentions and citations in AI answers, share of voice, sentiment and prompt research.” One answer per engine is a single reading, so take it as a snapshot of the question rather than a ranking.
Three ways tools put AI answers and rankings together
1. AI tracking as part of an SEO product. By their own descriptions, these are part of a wider SEO or marketing product. Whether its rank tracking sits beside the AI numbers is worth checking on each site; Semrush's says so in as many words. In their own words, checked on 25 September 2026:
- Semrush: The AI Visibility Toolkit inside Semrush's marketing suite: brand mentions and citations in AI answers, share of voice, sentiment and prompt research. Tracks appearances in AI Overviews beside the same brand's Google rankings.
- SE Ranking: SE Visible, SE Ranking's AI visibility app, also sold as a tracker inside the SE Ranking suite: brand mentions, sentiment and competitors in AI answers.
- Ahrefs: Brand Radar, Ahrefs' tracker for how often a brand is mentioned in AI answers, YouTube and Reddit, built on a database of real search prompts.
- BrightEdge: AI Catalyst, a module of BrightEdge's enterprise SEO platform that tracks brand visibility and sentiment in AI search.
- Conductor: An enterprise SEO and AEO platform that tracks a brand's presence and citations in AI answers beside traffic, conversions and site health.
2. An AI tracker that connects Search Console. AthenaHQ, Rankscale, Writesonic, Goodie, Ayzeo, Sight, Wellows and Dageno name a Google Search Console integration on their own sites. Search Console reports your own pages' clicks, impressions and average position on Google for the searches where they appeared, so a tracker that reads it can set them beside the AI numbers. It covers your own verified site, so where a competitor ranks needs a rank tracker. Search Console also has a generative AI performance report: how often links to your site were shown in Google's generative AI features, as impressions, with filters for text and multimodal searches.
3. A rank tracker and an AI tracker side by side. Two tools, or one tool and a spreadsheet. It works when both follow the same questions in the same country, and the cost is joining the two up yourself every week.
How to choose
- The engines your buyers use. If they search Google, the AI Overview is the engine a ranking predicts best: 41% of the sites it cited were on the first page. For ChatGPT, at 5%, track the mention itself.
- Keywords you choose, or your Search Console data. A rank tracker checks the keywords you pick, in the country you pick, including where competitors sit. Search Console reports your own site's average position for the searches that showed it.
- The answer, not only a score. A mention rate cannot tell you why you were left out. The stored answer and the sites it cited can.
- The same question on both sides. A ranking and an answer are comparable only when they come from the same question, asked in the same market.
- Every week, at least. Answers move between runs, so one reading is a sample of one. How much they move, and how to check weekly.
Being named also depends on which pages the engines read for your category, and outside Google's AI Overview most of the sites they cited were not on Google's first page. See the websites ChatGPT and the other engines cite, measured. For Google's AI Overviews on its own, see how to track AI Overviews.
How we measured this
Our methodology: these are buyer questions we track for our own product in our own workspace, asked as a buyer in the United States. Each figure on this page names the sample it comes from:
- September: 391 answers to 20 buyer questions from five engines, in four runs on 1, 2, 10 and 25 September 2026. They are the same answers our ranking of AI visibility tools counts, asked through the same models.
- 4 October 2026: one run of all 25 questions we track now, including five added on 25 September. 125 questions went out and 104 answers came back. ChatGPT answered 21 of 25, and Google's results page could be read for 9 of the 25 questions, 8 of which showed an AI Overview. Missing answers are left out, never counted as misses. The engines had moved to newer models on 29 September: ChatGPT gpt-5.6-luna, Claude claude-sonnet-5-5, Gemini gemini-3.6-flash and Perplexity perplexity/sonar.
The questions quoted on this page, exactly as the engines were asked them:
- “Which tool tracks my brand in AI answers and my Google rankings in one place?”
Cited means the website was among the sources the engine returned for that answer, counted once per answer however many of its pages were used.
Named means the tool appears in the answer's own words, matched the way our ranking matches it. Links are removed first, because a link to a vendor's blog is a source and not a recommendation. A tool named in the question is not counted for it. We match 42 AI visibility vendors plus our own product, so a tool outside that list is not counted however often it appears.
Google's first page is the organic results on page one of Google for the same question typed in full, read in the same visit as the AI Overview. It was captured for 72 of the 80 times a question was asked in September.
Where this can mislead. We chose the questions, and we sell a tool in this category, so read these as one company's measurement rather than a census. Answers came through each engine's API or Google's results page, which is close to what the consumer apps show but not identical, from one country in English.
Nobody paid to appear on this page, and no vendor saw it before it was published. Our editorial rule is to describe every vendor only in the words of its own site. If a figure or a description here looks wrong, tell us through the contact page.
Where Greater Than Services fits
Our own product, so read this as the vendor's description, not part of the measurement above.
Greater Than Services is a workspace per brand that puts your buyer questions to five AI engines every week, records which answers named you and what they cited instead, shows your Google rank beside each answer, and drafts the fixes. In the count above it was named in none of the 391 answers.
- If you need AI mentions and Google rank in one place, every workspace checks your Google position for the keywords you choose each week, next to the AI answers to your buyer questions.
- If you need your Search Console data beside them, Growth and Agency connect Search Console read-only, so clicks, impressions and average position sit beside the AI numbers.
- If you need the AI Overview your buyers actually see, Google AI Overviews is read off the live results page for your country, on every plan.
- If you need to know why an answer left you out, each answer is stored in full, with the sites it cited and the competitors it named.
Rank tracking covers the keywords you choose, 25 on Starter up to 250 on Agency, and the product re-reads the pages you pick rather than crawling your whole site.
Plans start at $49 a month, billed yearly, for one brand on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews; Growth and Agency cover all five engines. The three-day trial is on one brand and needs a card.
Questions people ask
Is there one tool that tracks AI answers and Google rankings?
Yes, several, in different ways. By their own sites, Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, BrightEdge and Conductor track AI answers as part of a wider SEO or marketing product, and AthenaHQ, Rankscale, Writesonic, Goodie, Ayzeo, Sight, Wellows and Dageno connect Google Search Console. Asked this question on 4 October 2026, the engines named Semrush most, then SE Ranking.
If I rank first on Google, will ChatGPT recommend me?
Not reliably. In our data the result that ranked first for a question was cited by ChatGPT in 6 of 72 answers. And only 8% of the answers that named a tool came when the tool's own site was on Google's first page for that question.
Does Google's AI Overview follow Google rankings?
More than the other engines do. In our data 41% of the sites AI Overviews cited were on Google's first page for the same question, against 13% or less for each of the other four engines.
Can Google Search Console show my AI visibility?
For Google's own AI features, partly: its generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, as impressions. For ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity you have to ask the engines themselves, which is what an AI visibility tracker does.
Does Greater Than Services track AI answers and Google rankings together?
Yes. It is our own product: every workspace checks your Google position for the keywords you choose each week, next to the AI answers to your buyer questions, and Growth and Agency connect Search Console. Rank tracking covers the keywords you choose, 25 on Starter up to 250 on Agency.
