Reddit and AI search

Reddit is going logged-in only. AI answers lean on it.

On 29 October Reddit told its shareholders it is shifting to a logged-in-only experience, starting with tests outside the US this quarter. For a lot of marketers that lands on a plan they already have: post on Reddit so AI assistants find the brand there. So how much do the assistants rely on Reddit? We store every answer to the buyer questions we track. In our September answers ChatGPT cited reddit.com in 28 of 80, more than any other site. Here is what Reddit said, what we measured, and what to do while nobody knows how the change will play out.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit is testing logged-in only outside the US first. Its letter gives no US date and does not say how search engines or AI crawlers will be treated (Reddit, 29 October 2026).
  • ChatGPT leaned on Reddit most. reddit.com was cited in 28 of its 80 answers, the most of any site, from 1 to 25 September 2026. Claude cited it in none of its 80.
  • It was the source behind the tools ChatGPT named. For every one of the six most-named tools, reddit.com was the site ChatGPT cited most in the answers that named them.
  • It already moves. In our 4 October 2026 run, on newer models, reddit.com was not among the ten sites ChatGPT cited most.

What Reddit said on 29 October

The news is in Reddit's third quarter 2026 letter to shareholders. In its words, "a key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience". On timing: "In Q4 we'll begin fully testing this in select markets outside the U.S. The results of those tests will inform an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally."

The letter gives three reasons: a better experience for users, more signals for ad targeting, and that it "allows us to protect access to Reddit's extremely valuable corpus of data". It also explains the timing. Search referral traffic "was down meaningfully in Q3", and the biggest impact was on logged-out and web traffic. In the letter's words: "During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week."

Logged-out visitors are most of Reddit's daily audience. The letter's table puts average daily active uniques at 130.3 million in the third quarter of 2026, of whom 76.8 million were logged out and 53.5 million logged in.

What the letter does not say is how search engines and AI crawlers will be treated once a visitor has to log in. So nobody can tell you yet whether AI answers will cite Reddit less. What we can show is how much they cite it now, so you can judge how much of your plan rests on it.

The change may also come in steps. Engadget reported from the earnings call that Reddit has not decided when a hard prompt to log in will appear, and that people arriving from shared links or search may still see some version of Reddit before it (Engadget, 29 October 2026).

Reddit is not the only site deciding what AI may read. On 30 October Google said it plans to support a shared robots.txt signal for opting out of AI training across AI providers, aiming for 2027 (Google Search Central, Supporting a shared AI training control). Google also wrote that sites which specifically allow Google-Extended are eligible to appear in responses and receive clicks via grounding in Gemini Apps. If you run your own site, blocking AI training and being cited in answers are separate choices.

How often AI answers cite Reddit, measured

We asked 20 buyer questions about AI visibility software four times from 1 to 25 September 2026, to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and read Google's AI Overview for the same searches. For each answer we saved the sites it cited. Here is how often each engine cited reddit.com:

For each engine, how many of its answers cited reddit.com, and where Reddit ranked among the sites it cited
EngineAnswers citing reddit.comRank among sites cited
ChatGPT28 of 801
Claude0 of 80never cited
Gemini14 of 803
Perplexity23 of 804
AI Overviews11 of 714

76 of 391 answers across the five engines cited reddit.com, 1 to 25 September 2026. These were questions about software; your category will have its own mix.

Two things stand out. ChatGPT read Reddit more than anything else, ahead of review sites and the vendors' own pages. And the engines differ a lot: Claude never cited Reddit in our sample, so Reddit threads were not part of what it read for these questions. Which websites each engine cites has the full lists.

When ChatGPT names a tool, Reddit is what it read

The sharper number is what ChatGPT had read when it named a business. For each of the six tools named most often, we took the ChatGPT answers that named it and counted the sites those answers cited:

For each of the most-named tools, the ChatGPT answers that named it and how many of them cited reddit.com
Tool namedChatGPT answers naming itOf those, citing reddit.comSite cited most
Semrush2812reddit.com
Otterly.AI3616reddit.com
Profound2612reddit.com
Peec AI249reddit.com
Ahrefs2010reddit.com
Scrunch157reddit.com

For every one of the six most-named tools, Reddit was the site ChatGPT cited most when it named them. It helps explain why the advice to be talked about on Reddit spread: in our sample, the threads were a large part of what ChatGPT read before it named anyone.

One run later, it looked different

Our newest run, on 4 October 2026, asked 25 questions on newer models. reddit.com was cited in 12 answers across the engines (Gemini 9, AI Overviews 3), and was not among the ten sites ChatGPT cited most. The questions were not all the same, so this is not a trend. It does show that what an engine reads can change in a month without any news from Reddit.

What to do about it

  1. Find out how much your own category depends on Reddit. Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask and look at the sources they cite. If Reddit is rarely among them, this news changes little for you.
  2. Do not put the whole plan on one site. The lists, reviews and comparison pages in your category are cited too, and so are your own pages. A plan spread across them does not depend on one site's login rules.
  3. Keep Reddit activity honest. Answer questions where you know the subject, say who you are, and skip anything that reads like seeding. That is what makes a thread worth reading, logged in or not.
  4. Watch for the change rather than guessing. Reddit is testing outside the US first, so the effect may show in some countries before others. A weekly check of the same questions will show if Reddit drops out of the sources. The weekly routine sets it out, free or with a tracker.
  5. Make your own pages easy to cite. How to get recommended by AI covers the steps that do not depend on anyone else's site.

Where Greater Than Services fits

Our own product, so read this as the vendor's description, not part of the measurement above.

Greater Than Services is a workspace per brand that puts your buyer questions to five AI engines every week, records which answers named you and what they cited instead, shows your Google rank beside each answer, and drafts the fixes.

  • If you need to know whether the assistants still cite Reddit for your buyers' questions, it asks your questions every week and records the sites each answer cited, so a site dropping out shows up as a change.
  • If you need to see which sites to work on instead, the cited sites sit next to each answer, with the competitors it named, so you can see what the assistants read in your category.
  • If you need the engines beside each other, the same questions go to ChatGPT, and on the larger plans to Claude, Gemini and Perplexity too, plus Google's AI Overview where one is shown.

It tracks your questions and the sites the answers cite. It cannot see how Reddit treats AI crawlers, or any deal between Reddit and an AI company.

Plans start at $49 a month, billed yearly, for one brand on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews; Growth and Agency cover all five engines. The three-day trial is on one brand and needs a card.

Common questions

Is Reddit going logged-in only?

Reddit says it is moving that way. Its letter to shareholders of 29 October 2026 calls shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience a key piece of work, says it will begin fully testing this in select markets outside the US in the fourth quarter of 2026, and says the results will inform a logged-in-only Reddit globally. It gave no date for the US.

Will AI assistants stop citing Reddit?

Nobody outside Reddit and the AI companies can say yet. The letter says the change helps protect access to Reddit's corpus of data, but it does not say how search engines or AI crawlers will be treated. The useful thing to do is watch the sites the assistants cite in your own category and see whether Reddit drops out.

How often does ChatGPT cite Reddit?

In our own answers to 20 buyer questions about AI visibility software (1 to 25 September 2026), ChatGPT cited reddit.com in 28 of 80 answers, more than any other site. Claude cited it in none of its 80. In the newest run (4 October 2026), on newer models, reddit.com was not among the ten sites ChatGPT cited most.

Should I stop posting on Reddit to get named by AI?

Not because of this news alone, and not if the posts are useful to the people reading them. Treat Reddit as one source among several: the lists, reviews and comparison pages in your category, and your own pages, are cited too, and they do not depend on one site's login rules.
